HISTORY OF JALAN TEMBUSU. MARINE PARADE

Marine Parade is a residential and planning area located in Singapore’s central region. It is bordered by the planning areas of Singapore Straits to the south, Bedok to the northeast, Marina East to the southwest, Geylang to the north, and Kallang to the northwest. The area straddles the tip of the southeastern coast of Pulau Ujong and serves as a barrier between the east and central regions of the city-state.

Marine Parade has a rich history associated with the Katong neighborhood. Before the government reclaimed it, Marine Parade was an extension of Katong and was known for its Straits Chinese culture and unique architectural design. It is even credited as being the source of the famous Katong Laksa dish. Today, Marine Parade primarily consists of residential flats on its southernmost points that were built after the east coast island was reclaimed.

Land reclamation works at Marine Parade began in 1966 as part of a multiphase government project. By 1985, almost 1525 hectares of land had been reclaimed, including the east coast’s recreational coastline, which expanded the area by 18 kilometers. Marine Parade was the first housing estate built entirely on reclaimed land near Tembusu Grand Condo Location.

In 1981, the government unveiled development plans for Marine Parade with the goal of constructing an expressway connecting Marine Parade and other housing estates on the east coastline to the city. Commercial and recreational areas and public amenities were also built to add vibrancy to the area.

The first estate development phase was completed by the end of 1973, which included the construction of markets, shops, offices, and 6000 units. The second phase of the project aimed to add more community and commercial facilities, including more shops, a post office, public housing, a library, and school hawker centers.

In the 1980s, Marine Parade was the most desirable place to live in Singapore due to its seafront, recreational and commercial facilities, and its ambience. In 1992, Marine Parade was the first estate in Singapore to undergo the government’s Main Upgrading Program, which aimed to upgrade aging sites.

Today, Marine Parade is a well-established residential area with fantastic food, adequate amenities, and historical precincts all within an accessible range. The area is planned to be self-sufficient and livable with accessible healthcare, shops, schools, community parks, and facilities. Upcoming developments under the URA master plan are expected to improve the area’s rank in Singapore’s economy.
